Former 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter has started receiving hospice care

Eric Gardner, the manager of Richard Belzer, stated that Belzer died in the early morning hours of Sunday at his residence in France, and it was a peaceful passing.

Richard Belzer achieved notoriety for his portrayal of Detective Munch, starting with his debut on NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" from 1993 to 1999. He continued to play the part in the TV movie "Homicide: The Movie" in 2000 and also starred as the beloved detective in four installments of "Law & Order."

Richard Belzer's first film appearance was in the uproarious "The Groove Tube" (1974), he was a crowd-pleaser in the early years of "Saturday Night Live," and he became famous for being put to sleep by Hulk Hogan.

Belzer played Munch once again in "Law & Order: SVU" and became a recurring character, featuring in 326 episodes between 1999 and 2016. Despite retiring his role in 2013, he appeared in two more episodes after his exit.

Throughout his career, Belzer played a detective on 11 TV shows, like “The Wire” and “The X-Files,” and had guest roles in character on “30 Rock,” “Arrested Development” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” In a "Sesame Street" skit called “Special Letters Unit,” his detective Munch was even portrayed as a muppet.

Richard Belzer played the character of M.C. in the popular 1980 movie "Fame." He then appeared in other movies such as "Night Shift" (1982) and "Scarface" (1983), where he starred alongside Al Pacino. In the 1990s, he also featured in superhero television shows such as "The Flash" and "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman."
